A Valentine Twelve Years in the Making

It was Valentine’s Day 2004, and the County of San Francisco had just started issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples.  It was the first jurisdiction anywhere in the country to do so, and gay and lesbian couples from across the nation flocked to the city to get married.

It was a big news story, so I decided to check it out for myself.  I grabbed my camera and caught the next flight North.

I’ve been following seven couples I met that first weekend ever since and, with last June’s landmark decision by the Supreme Court, am now ready to share their stories
